F W Alexander Warehouse Church and Front

Mr. Alexander arrived in Toronto from Scotland in 1868 and immediately set up a little business on The Esplanade when that was still the harbourfront dealing in the manufacturing of sole leather and hides.  He would sit by the window of his small cramped place of business and stitch all day and night long under the fuzzy glow of an oil lamp.

His hard work paid off.  His workmanship was not only exquisite but also hardy.
As his enterprise expanded with tanneries in Huntsville and Bracebridge he built larger premises which are still standing on the SE corner of Church and Front and are now home to The Second Cup and the Church Street entrance to C'est What.
By 1893 he was now doing $600,000 dollars annually.
