Old Town Toronto - Markets & Specialty Foods
Farmers Markets have gained popularity by providing local food, fresh food, and specialty food, in a family friendly and affordable manner. The tradition of a St. Lawrence Farmers' Market in Toronto began on this site in 1803, and has been held each Saturday since. Throughout the year, over 50 (and in summer, even more) Ontario growers and producers bring their seasonal produce to the Saturday Market. Experienced shoppers get there for the 5 a.m. opening, for super fresh food, to buy fresh produce, plants and flowers, fresh herbs, organic meat, organic vegetables, and many speciality foods, from farmers and artisans from across Ontario. Each farm, baker and chocolate maker is a specialty food store, bringing you fresh food each Saturday, all year long.
Over the years, the market has survived and thrived many changes, including the Great Fire of 1849 and several reconstructions of the building. A new building is planned that will be more fitting for a heritage farmers market with such heritage and adjacent to the local historic buildings, St. Lawrence Hall and the South St. Lawrence Market. Fresh food stores and lunch counters of the South St. Lawrence Market are open Tuesday through Saturday
